Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) plays a significant role in fostering continued bilateral and multilateral relations for Papua New Guinea in areas of security, trade and others.

Its primary purpose, among others, is to;

  1. Create and Maintain Bilateral and Multilateral Relations;
  2. Negotiate Trade and Foster Economic Cooperation; and
  3. Other vital functions.

The Department comes directly under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which is headed by a Secretary.

There are various Divisions;

  1. Executive Division
  2. Corporate Division
  3. Protocol Division
  4. Political, Security & Treaties Division
  5. Economic & Development Cooperation Division
  6. Trade Division
  7. Office of the Minister

The Department has been successful in hosting the APEC Meeting in Port Moresby in 2018.
